Dominican Digest January 2010

Dear Friends and Family,
The elderly woman led us into the back room where her husband lay moaning. It was so dark I could barely make out his thin form under the covers of the bed. “He’s gotten much worse…he hasn’t been able to get out of bed for days.” She opened the door and in seeped a little light and fresh air. I read a Scripture from one of the gospels about Jesus healing a man. Then, translating for one of the guys on the team, I asked the man if he’d like us to pray for him. “Yes, please,” said José weakly. We began to pray fervently for the man’s healing, and he began to weep. When our prayers died down, the team felt he should get up out of bed. Since he was only wearing underwear, the women exited and waited in the living room while the guys helped him get up and presentable. He was a bit wobbly, but José walked into the living room and was able to stand on his own. Then, as I translated, one of the team members read from 1 John 1:9 and shared the gospel. José said he wanted to pray and ask Jesus to forgive him and heal him. He repeated the sinner’s prayer and began to weep and tremble. Then he lifted his hands and cried out to God in his own words, “You know I’m a sinner, Lord, but I know You can forgive me. Last night I was crying out to You for help, and today You have sent me these people to comfort me and show me the way. I believe that You can heal me; I believe that You have healed me…” There was an incredibly powerful sense of the Spirit in that small crowded living room. As I opened my eyes, I saw a young girl (granddaughter?) over in the corner weeping. I went over to her, and thirteen year old Marielys told me that she, too, wanted to invite Jesus to be her Savior and Lord. We prayed and rejoiced together.
We were hosting a nine member short-term mission team from Louisiana. One morning we went to Janey (a village even further up the mountains) to collaborate with the pastor and members of the local church. Our hope was to encourage them; however, we left greatly encouraged that God is at work. That day as we walked through part of the village, entering into the houses to pray and share the gospel with people, there were at least seven people who made professions of faith.
The team helped us by building a shed and participating in community outreach work. A special answer to prayer was the opening of more opportunities in the local school. The former director was receptive, but she had been replaced by a former teacher who was hostile to us in the past. We were concerned that the door to the school might be closing. However, the new director agreed to allow the team to enter during recess time and seemed very pleased with the presentation. She asked if we might be able to provide her with some more Bibles for the students, and even invited Kim to return later as a guest speaker in the religion class!
There was a hairstylist on the team who brought some equipment and gave some basic hair cutting and styling lessons. Four of the young ladies that attended faithfully received their own set of equipment, and we are attempting a micro-enterprise Salon here in the ministry center. The idea is that these young girls may be able to earn some money and continue their education. Various team members also helped by offering the use of their laptops for some introductory computer classes. We thank God for their willingness to serve and bless us and the community.
Praises and Prayer Requests:
? On Thanksgiving Day we hosted an information/training seminar for about 130 people from the community who are part of a special program designed to help them gain the titles to their land.
? Although we are still working through a few kinks in our water and electric system, the new well has proven to be an abundant and constant source of water.
? The earthquake that hit Haiti was felt here, but thankfully, we sustained no damage. We are keeping the Haitian people in our hearts and prayers.
? Recently, we completed a course on stewardship through Crown Financial Ministries and have been asked to be leaders of a small group in our church.
? Daniela loves helping to wash the dishes, milk the goats, mix cement, sing and dance, ride the horse (or calf, or goat, or cat, or anything else…), and entertain David. David is pretty laid back; he eats a lot, smiles a lot, and absolutely adores his big sister. They are a great joy to us!
? We’ll be making a trip to Florida in late February/early March to take care of some business in the States, visit the family, and see one of our supporting churches there.
Finally, we thank the Lord for you! Thank you for your prayers and your support. We are so grateful for your friendship and your partnership in this ministry. God is at work!
Shalom,

Ambiorix, Kim, Daniela & David Calderon
